Obituary of Alec Rogers

We are sad to announce the passing of Alec Rogers. Alec passed away peacefully after a brief illness. He was born in Victoria, BC on August 8, 1935, to George and Genevieve Rogers. Here, Alec learned his strong work ethic on the Rogers Dairy Farm alongside his sister Phyllis. Alec met the love of his life and married Myrle on April 13^th, 1957. Not one to waste time and being a man of limited patience, Alec and Myrle set about starting a family with the birth of their son Stephen in Vancouver. From the beginning Alec and Myrle were a team, living off Myrle’s savings while attending UVIC to become a teacher.

Alec’s first job was in Cranbrook, B.C. at Mount Baker High School. In quick succession, Cyndie, Mark and Brent joined the clan. Four kids in five years ensured the household was going to be active. Many of Alec’s teaching partners became lifelong friends with the families getting together for activities outside of work. Alec taught many courses, such as mechanics, woodwork, metalwork and math at Mt. Baker for 34 years. Several of the approximately 4,000 students he taught have reached out to share the positive experiences they had. Some had nicknamed him “Woody” for his woodworking skills. Some of the students recall dodging a piece of chalk thrown to catch their attention, etc. Alec loved teaching his students and many remember the extra effort Mr. Rogers put in to help them, opening the shop up for their projects early in the morning, lunchtime and afterschool.

When Alec retired from teaching, he started a new venture, Rogers Marine and began the boat repair business. He quickly became the “go to guy” for boat engine repairs. His marine business lasted for 25 years. Alec was very skilled, if he couldn’t find a part to fix something, he would fabricate it. During the slower winter months, Alec and Myrle enjoyed travelling & cruising to many amazing locations around the world.

Not one to stay idle, Alec also was a proud member of the Cranbrook Sunrise Rotary Club. Due to his extensive involvement, he was named Rotarian of the Year for two years. His willingness to help others has been a cornerstone of his life. Alec has made numerous, enduring friendships throughout his many activities such as poker parties, hunting and fishing.

Alec’s passion for the outdoors in well known in the community.  He spent his lifetime exploring the lakes, creeks & mountains in the area. Myrle was a huge support for Alec and his pursuits. He couldn’t have asked for a better partner. The family loved camping in the motorhome Alec built. Many stories were shared by the campfire over the years with family and friends. The Moyie Lake properties have been the core of many meaningful events for the Rogers’ family, including weddings, reunions, birthdays and funerals. Alec was always there to ignite laughter and sometimes a small bonfire.

We take comfort believing that Alec has been happily reunited with family, his hunting, fishing and poker friends and will be enjoying many new adventures.

Alec is survived by his wife Myrle, his children, grand children and great grandchildren.

He will be missed by all.

A Celebration of Alec’s life will be held at McPherson Funeral home, May 25, 2024, at 2 pm. A reception will follow at Willowbrook Hall, 1401 Willowbrook Drive.
