The family announces with great sadness the passing of Gary "Simon" Emerson Simpson, who left us peacefully on January 24, 2025, in Cranbrook, B.C., at the age of 71. Born on May 31, 1953, Gary spent his early years in Valley East and Sudbury, ON. From a young age, Gary was a man of simple pleasures, finding joy in the great outdoors. His love for nature eventually drew him to western Canada.
Known to many as "Simon", Gary was an adventurous spirit. Throughout his life, he traveled and worked across the breadth of Canada, building many lasting friendships along the way. He eventually settled in the beautiful city of Cranbrook, B.C., where he worked in the mining industry until his retirement in 2015.
An avid sportsman, Gary enjoyed hunting, fishing, and camping in the breathtaking mountains of British Columbia. He was also passionate about motorcycling, taking many memorable trips with fellow bikers across the country. In retirement, Gary found great joy in the company of his beloved 3-legged sidekick, Cooper. Together, they spent many peaceful days enjoying walks, exploring new places, and sharing a special bond that brought comfort and happiness to Gary.
Gary is survived by his daughter Julie Gionest (Jon Marsh) of Capreol, ON; his son Cody of Kelowna, B.C.; and his granddaughter, Elliana. He is also survived by his mother, Marie Anna (Anne), of Sudbury, ON; his siblings, Allan (Maureen) of Capreol, ON; Dawn-Ellen Cottrell (Dave) of Hanmer, ON; and Randy of Elkford, B.C. He will be sadly missed by his nieces and nephews.
Gary was preceded in death by his father, Emerson.
The family wishes to express their deepest gratitude to the staff on the 3rd floor of East Kootenay Regional Hospital for their compassionate care and support during his final months. A heartfelt thank you also goes to Randy, who selflessly relocated to be closer to Gary, offering unwavering support during his palliative care. Your compassion and presence brought comfort and peace to all of us during this difficult time.
A memorial service in Sudbury, ON, will be held at a later date.
