Obituary of Francina deZoete
Please share a memory of Francina to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
With love and gratitude for a life well lived, we announce the passing of Francina deZoete, who left us peacefully at the age of 97. Born on January 19, 1928, in Honselersdijk, the Netherlands, Francina was the eldest of six children — her hands were never idle always darning, knitting or peeling potatoes. As a schoolgirl, she was made to tie her left hand behind her back to become right-handed, a small but enduring symbol of her quiet perseverance and ability to adapt.
Francina met the love of her life, Cornelis deZoete (predeceased), and after a six-year courtship, they married in April 1949. Shortly after, the couple immigrated to Canada, sponsored to work on a fruit farm in Ontario. They eventually settled in Hamilton, Ontario, where they raised four children and built a warm and loving home. In 1992, they relocated to Cranbrook, British Columbia, where they spent the rest of their years together.
Francina was a gifted seamstress, trained in the Netherlands, who continued sewing for others after moving to Canada. She crafted everything from everyday clothing to wedding dresses, winter coats, boat sails, and upholstery; she also shared her skills by teaching sewing. A talented knitter and crocheter, she lovingly created sweaters, tablecloths, and blankets for her children and grandchildren.
She gave generously of her time to others, volunteering with the March of Dimes, the Canadian Cancer Society, and as a Friendly Visitor at the hospital in Cranbrook. Her warmth and kindness made a lasting impression on everyone she met.
Francina and Cornelis shared a love of the outdoors and adventure, traveling across Canada and the United States in their Airstream trailer. She took great joy in going for walks, always at a brisk pace, as anyone who tried to keep up with her would know.
Francina leaves behind four children Frances, Henry, Jenny (Ron) and Corrinne (John), five grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren; she loved them all. Her legacy of quiet strength, creativity, generosity, and devotion to family and friends will live on in their hearts.
A private gathering to celebrate her life was held in Cranbrook as per her wishes. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly invites you to take a walk, visit someone who could use some company, or create something by hand — in honour of Francina’s beautiful spirit.
