I first met Ethel on November 28, 2004. I know this because our meeting left such an impact on me that I wrote about it in the live journal I kept then. Upon hearing of her passing, I decided to look up that particular entry. At the time, I was a high school student singing in the choir at St. Mary's and she came up to me after church and said, "You have a beautiful voice, dear. God loves you and so do I." I can't express how much it meant to hear such words from someone who was, at that point, a stranger to me. We grew to know each other more over the years, and when I moved to Victoria for university, I tried to keep in touch when I could. Every time we talked, she would say the same words that started it all: "God loves you and so do I." Sadly, we hadn't talked in a while, which is why it's taken me so long to make it to this page to leave my condolences and say how special Ethel was to me. In some extremely unfortunate (but also beautiful) timing, I had to sing the Psalm at church the day after I found out, and while it was one of the hardest things for me to do without breaking down, I knew I had to make it through, for Ethel. So, rest in peace, sweet Ethel. God loves you, and so do I.

I was priviledged to spend time with Ethel when she was, to me, "The Red Hat Lady" resident of the Green Home. Always feisty, always a stylish participant in all the special occasion, sing-a-long gatherings, Ethel lit up the room. She was generous in all ways.
Ethel will be missed but I'll remember her hats and her voice; her opinions...and her love...Ethel is gone from our physical presence. She will never be lost to me. I am sure she will continue to 'tune us all up' from Elsewhere...I'll lean in and listen, remember and try to sing-a-long and do as I'm told. :-)))
With love,
Gerri Atchison.

Oh how I will miss Ethel!!! I will never play "Somewhere My Love" without thinking of her. She taught me the hymn, "God on the Mountain.". and it meant so much to both of us. I know I will meet her again in Heaven and we will finally get to play in a band together. All the Thursday night "Singalongers" and I will miss her love and encouragement. Make beautiful music 'til we meet again. Judy Johnson

I am so sorry to hear of Ethel's passing. She was so full of love and life. We had the pleasure of getting to know her when she lived across the street from us. She loved to sit on her balcony and watch our son play in the sprinklers. She gave him the nickname "The boss." Ethel will be greatly missed. My condolences to her family!
Love the Adrian's

My condolences to the family and friends of Ethel. We could have the best chats when ever we met. We would tease about Ukrainians and those that wished they were when it came to cooking. She was an awesome lady. RIP dear friend

It was an absolute pleasure getting to know Ethel in her later years. Cranbrook was a better town with her in our midst; we have lost a real character. Rest in peace, Ethel.
