Buzz Mellor
With deep sadness, we inform of the sudden passing of Percy Kenneth "Buzz" Mellor in his home on Monday, June 12, 2017.
Buzz was born in Kimberley in 1928. He was a gifted skating and stick-handling hockey player, starring as a Junior at Notre Dame College in Wilcox, SK, and then on Provincial Championship winning Senior teams in Saskatchewan and British Columbia.
He played third base with the renowned Kimberley Dynamos senior baseball team in the days before television, with standing room only crowds, he entertained with his lightning throw to first base.
Ending his hockey career with the WIHL Kimberley Dynamiters, Buzz became a regular Western International Hockey League Referee. For many years, he was a fan favourite, except for one in Spokane, who threw a folding steel chair, hitting him on the head, for much blood on the striped shirt and publicity. This incident is still written about in Spokane hockey stories.
After many years working as an Underground Mine Surveyor at the Sullivan Mine, Buzz enjoyed thirty years of retirement at his home since 1952 on Rotary Drive. Buzz then travelled some, enjoyed long walks with his dog, the New York Yankees, pro baseball games in Seattle and fishing weekly in the upper St. Mary's River.
Buzz is survived by his wife of 66 years Betty, a son Kenneth William, a daughter Gayle Margaret, a granddaughter Danika, a great grandson Seth, granddaughters Emma and Justina and families and a brother Milton "Red" Mellor. In 2002 Buzz was predeceased by a son, Russell Milton Mellor.
Arrangements entrusted to McPherson Funeral Service.
