Oooooooh, it is with VERY heavy heart that I read today (01/07/18) this news about my friend Sebastien! I was Googling to find his kids, the furriers north of Vancouver, and spotted this info instead.
I knew your dad because I had inherited my Opa's Harfe Zithers and had befriended Ron Bracklow, a fellow zither player who resides in SFO, CA. One of you was kind enough to send me one of his CD's when I bought it on ebay and that's how I knew of the fur connection.
Sebastien and I would have long distance chats. He told me about his home in the mountains and that he lived north of Spokane, WA. I am in Seattle and he promised the next time he would come to Washington, I could drive over to eastern Washington meet up with him. I knew all of you were encouraging him to move from the house because it was too much for him. Did he listen? He went overseas to play zither for children in the jungles! lol What a man. We would speak Bavarian and Austrian together. I appreciated these calls every now and then.
My own husband died exactly one month before Sebastien. I hope that he greeted Herr Fichtl as he crossed over and they had a good time together, after your dad gave his wife a long deserved kiss.
And so, until it's time for each of YOU to cross the Rainbow Bridge to that special place beyond the clouds, for that glorious Auf Wiedersehen. I raised a toast in his honor -Prost......

Dear Esther and Family,
Your dad will be terribly missed by his family and all that knew him. His zest for life, love of music and his family is an inspiration. He showed us how to grow old by not letting age slow him down. We enjoyed our time visiting him in Wasa, with one of the prettiest lakes anywhere, and seeing him at Esther's, surely one of his favourite places. He could not have had better end of life care Esther, you gave him a wonderful gift.
Lots of Love
Elaine and Tony

Sebastian's smile could light up a whole room. It was fun to hear him tell jokes, even the bad ones, because he was having so much fun. I have so many fond memories coming to their house in Coquitlam when I was a kid. If I had to stay home sick sometimes Irma and Sebastian would take me in. I'd lie on the couch being fed yummy food and get to listen to Sebastian play the zither. We haven't been able to see him as much since he moved to Wasa but Tania and I had a fun visit with him many years ago when he was playing the zither in Lake Louise. It was like no time had passed by. I am grateful to have known him and Irma and their family.

Thank you very much Edna. Our father loved the Winnipeg connection and I remember your family visiting in Wasa. We miss our father terribly and it is hard to believe he is no longer with us. Kind regards, Esther (the oldest daughter)

I am one of Sebastian's many nieces. Sebastian has always been an inspiration for me, and encouraged me to live life to the fullest, the way that he did, and find my own unique expression in the world. He has touched the lives of so many people through his music and travels—hundreds of thousands of people. I remember going through Lake Louise on a road trip and stopping in to see him at the Chateau he was playing at. He finished the song and then took a break right away so we could visit a bit. So I can picture him playing there, and the many people who enjoyed his presence and his music. He said everyone asks for Blue Danube, but they don't really know what it is and it is 11 minutes long! But of course he was so good natured, he played it anyway. Like Kim said, we loved listening to his records as children, especially Pepsi Was a Chicken. He visited us at the house on Portland Street in Burnaby (which used to be the Fichtl's house; my parents Erwin and Donnette bought it from Irma and Sebastian in 1967, when Kim was born) shortly after Elvis died in 1977. He was very sad about the death of the King, and gave us a poster of Elvis. My deepest condolences to Sebastian's children and grandchildren. A bright light has gone out of the world. He lives on in our memories, and there are some wonderful videos of him playing zither on YouTube.

The world, and especially our region, has lost a great zither player. Sebastian and I first met at his Wasa Lake home in 1996 when I visited the East Kootenay region for the first time to buy an old zither from him. Both my wife and I continue to enjoy his lively and yet relaxing recordings on special occasions as well as year-round. Our deepest condolences to your family on your loss.
Adieu, Sebastian. Jetzt kannst Du wunderschoene Melodien mit den Engeln spielen!
Best regards,

I am so sorry for your loss. I have many fond memories of Uncle Sebastian over the years. I remember listening to his records as a child and spending time at the Fichtl family home in Coquitlam. Your dad lived life fully and he will be missed by many. It is wonderful that you were all able to be with him at the end and he was surrounded by the love of his children.

I knew you dad as a child and remember when he met your mother. Your dad and Karl Volkman had room and board in my parents' home who were new immigrants from Austria so as you can imagine, for the next 6 years your dad and Karl became part of the family and as such, were with us for Christmases and New Years. The live entertainment was always your dad and his zither to the delight of all. I remember he seldom missed a meal at home because my mother cooked only traditional Viennese food and lots of it. We saw him start his first furniture business with Karl, get married to your mother and watched his family grow with each one of you kids. I even babysat when you lived in Coquitlam and at the time, I believe there was only the 3 oldest girls, the 3 youngest hadn't been born yet. I have many, many fond memories of you parents when they were very young. My condolences to you all, you made your dad very proud. Joanne Butler (Mischke)
