Obituary of John Allen Scanland

1917 - 2010

John Scanland longtime resident of Cranbrook, passed away in Joseph Creek Care Village on Thursday, August 5, 2010 at 12:12 am with his family surrounding him, and he was carried away by Angels to his heavenly home.

John was born in Regina, Saskatchewan on September 4, 1917.

He is survived by his loving wife of 71 years, Marion (nee Healey); four children, Marion Plank (Frank), Kathryn Orth (Ed), John Scanland (Darlene) and Ruth Alfano (Dom); 13 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; and 6 great great grandchildren. He will be missed also by his brothers Jim (Mary) Scanland, and Ken (Kay) Scanland and many wonderful nephews and nieces and some very wonderful friends.

Awaiting him beyond the veil are his father and mother, John and Elsa Scanland infant brother Norman and infant sister Eileen; his sisters Kathryn (Harry Sandberg) and Dorothy (her 1st husband Dick Diltz) and (her 2nd husband Johnny Sandberg); his grandson (baby) Brian Scanland, as well as his nephews Glen and Eric Sandberg.

John worked in the South Country, Waldo, Wardner, and Gold Creek areas as a youngster. He later logged in Creston and St. Mary's as a teamster faller, skidder operator and truck driver for many years. In 1956 he incorporated his own business in Cranbrook.

John loved music and gladly volunteered his talents to bring joy to many in hospitals and seniors homes as well as on the dance floor. He was a kind and caring man, and always ready to help his fellow man in need. He will be greatly missed by his family and dear friends.

A funeral service for John will be held on Wednesday, August 11, 2010 at 1:00 pm in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints located at 2210 - 2nd Street North in Cranbrook.
