To Faye, Lisa, Lori & husbands,
It is with great sadness that I share with your entire famiy on your recent loss of Dave. We moved back to Cranbrook in 1992 and I began to coach baseball again. At the time my daughter Kelly was in Midgets so I coached one of those teams while Dave and Allan Coles coached the Pee Wee Rep Team. Those were the best of times and I loved to coach against them. They were all about honesty, fair play and teaching the skills to all the players to get them to play to the best of their ability. There was a rule back then that if at game time if you didn't have 8 players on the field you forfeited the game. Dave and Allan wouldn't go for that rule and neither did I as we would loan a player or two to the other side to get the game going and as the players showed up we took our players back. Our team was older and stronger at certain positions but their team was smaller, quick and talented. I remember one game that was very close and we were playing them in one of the tournaments. Lisa, you had come up to bat and hit in the winning run. I will never forget your Dad as he pretended to get mad at his own daughter hitting in that run, but I knew in my heart, as a father, that he was bursting inside with pride that you had learned to bat like that. As you kids moved on I became an umpire like him and Allan and we spent many more hours on the ball fields. It was an honor to have coached aginst him and I will never forget his traits of fair play, modesty and his passion for the game and teaching it to so many other people. Kindest Regards- Dick Robinson

Faye, Lisa and Lori, so sorry to hear of Dave's passing. We remember when he dressed up as Santa and handed out candy canes on our Candy Cane Lane. What a great guy, he will be missed.

When I step to the plate for my final at bat
And the game is called for me,
I want no rites in a gloom filled room
Why cry for a soul set free!
Miss me a little, but not to long
And not with your head bowed low.
Remember the love that we once shared,
Miss me but let me go.
Game called-what more is there to say.?
The field looks drab to the eye
I ruled it in my golden day
Now I wave my cap goodbye
For this journey we all must take
And each must go alone
It's all part of the big game plan
A trot round bases safe at home
Hey coach Dave, well I must say I'm gonna miss u..I wanna thank u for what u taught me on the field..I'll never 4get the ball games, our wins, our losses like u said u win some n lose some...lots of good memories for sure...guess we won't be going for that ride this summer on our bikes,I'm planning to go for a ride with u here,u can watch me frm up above....rest in paradise....Mandy D(turtle)

Life to me seems so unfair. David was a awesome cousin, like my sister Susan said, he loved to tease us, and I loved it too because I felt like I had a big Brother when he was around. It's hard when all your cousins live all over Canada. You don't get to see eachother as much as you would like. David will be missed by all of us. My Love and Prayers go to all of the Neilson family, and anyone who was touched by David's life. He was a great Guy, and now he, Uncle Paul and Dad can all go hunting together, under God's watchfull eye. Love to the Family at this very sad time in your life.
Lots of Love
Kim, Jim, KimTrevor and Jesse Bilodeau

I was very sad to hear about David's passing. I remember his sense of humour and how he loved to tease us when we were younger. I know this will be very difficult for you Aunt Marge, but he would want you to be strong. My thoughts will be with all of you on Monday.
Love and Hugs

Faye - I was so sorry to hear of David's passing. He was far too young to be gone so soon. Although we haven't kept in touch too often over the years, I still remember fondly our years growing up in Smithfield. ON. Those were very happy, carefree days - riding our bikes to the beach, playing in the woods, riding the school bus every day....great memories. Paula and I were best friends, and David was always there in the background as well. He will be very much missed.
Love, Mary Fraser

Dave, You have been a great inspiration to me as a young kid and now as an adult. You were the "father" that I looked up to and will always call you my 2nd dad. I am thankful for the talks we shared and will always remember and share your stories about softball. Thank you for teaching me to always live, and never look back at the negative!
Love forever, Christa
