Mabel Elizabeth Hegland
1928 - 2018
With broken hearts, we announce the passing of a "special little lady" who brought much joy and happiness into the lives of those who knew her. Mabel Elizabeth Hegland (nee Kaisner) peacefully passed away at age 89 while surrounded by family on March 6th, 2018 at the FW Green Home in Cranbrook, BC.
Mabel was born May 17th, 1928 in Natal, BC and grew up in the Elk Valley. Mabel met the love of her life, Lloyd Hegland, while he was working in the mines and they married in 1945. Mabel and Lloyd were blessed with 51 years of marriage and 2 daughters, Karen Hegland and Karla Shardlow. Karla's two children, Ciane and Denby, became a centerpiece of her life as her "precious grandchildren".
Mabel worked hard all her life and had many talents. She tried to retire in her late 60's, but returned to work before retiring again in her 80's. Mabel might be remembered from her days at Supervalu in Nelson, Elkford, or Fernie. She might also be remembered from her time spent planting trees and picking cones for the forestry, or her work with Lloyd and his gravel construction company in the Elk Valley. She might also be remembered from her time at the LazyBear Lodge in Cranbrook.
Mabel always had time for a smile and a coffee - her favorite pastime. She enjoyed her afternoon coffee and weekly brunch dates with her daughter Karla. Mabel was an adventurous, magnetic personality and enjoyed joining Karla on road trips and jobs around the East Kootenay area making friends along the way. Mabel had an easy smile and lighthearted laugh and will be missed by all who were fortunate enough to know her.
Mabel was predeceased by her loving husband (Lloyd), her parents Anna and Jerry Kaisner, and her dear sisters Myrtle Cerny and Mildred McIntyre. Mabel will be dearly missed by her daughters Karen Hegland of Richmond, BC, and Karla Shardlow (Ron James) of Cranbrook, BC. Mabel also leaves behind a loving brother, Kenneth Kaisner of Fernie, BC, and her two grandchildren Ciane Shardlow (Carl Swanson) of Victoria, BC, and Denby Shardlow of Cranbrook, BC, as well as many other loving relatives and friends.
The family of Mabel would like to give a special thank you to Dr. K. Nishi - a wonderful doctor who took excellent care of Mabel. A heartfelt thanks to the staff and care workers of the Green Home, who always went the 'extra mile' to care for Mabel and help make her days easier prior to her passing.
At Mabel's request, no funeral service will be held. Instead, may your memories of Mabel bring a smile to your face as you remember a lively woman who cared about everyone. Enjoy a cup of coffee or a good dance to remember her life, laughter, and warmth.
Arrangements entrusted to McPherson Funeral Service.
