It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Cheryl Byford at Cranbrook Regional Hospital September 2, 2007. Cheryl was born in Kamloops BC to Evelyn and Gary Sternig on June 22, 1961 and moved to Cranbrook at the age of 11. She graduated from Mount Baker High School in 1979, attended Selkirk College in Castelgar, and subsequently worked many years in Cranbrook for Tembec Industries while raising a family in the community of Mayook. Cheryl is survived by her loving husband Randy, daughters Janna, Jenny, and Abby, parents Evelyn Sternig and Gary Sternig, her sister Susan (Pete) Thrasher, brothers Greg (Claudia) and Brent (Christine) Sternig, and in-laws the Byford family Bus (Charlotte; predeceased by Ruby), Steve (Diane), Doug, Geoff (Jackie), and 11 nieces and nephews and numerous cousins. Cheryl will be missed by her many friends, and always remembered for her beautiful smile, contagious laugh, and competitive spirit.The family would like to extend a special thank you to the many people of Cranbrook that supported Cheryl in her battle against Breast Cancer. We are fortunate to live amongst such fine people. We would also like to extend our sincere thanks to all of the medical professionals that came in contact with Cheryl for their care, concern and professionalism. The family is especially grateful to Val Paolini and Doctors O'Brien and Lowden of the Cranbrook Oncology unit. There will be a funeral service held at Christ the Servant Catholic Church on Friday, September 7th at 1:00pm followed by a reception at the Heritage Inn. At Cheryl's request, in lieu of flowers or gifts, please direct donations to the Neuro-Oncology Advancement Fund, in order to help others from around the province that may require this specialized care.
