Obituary of Roy Sherman Harris
Please share a memory of Roy to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Roy passed away peacefully at home in Cranbrook with his family after a courageous one-year battle with cancer.
Born in Cranbrook, Roy graduated high school, enlisted as an aircraft mechanic in The Royal Canadian Air Force serving three years before returning to Cranbrook where he worked as a faller and mill worker. He obtained a position with British Columbia Telephone (Telus) as a lineman. Roy transferred to and made Nelson his home. There he met the absolute love of his life, Louisa whom he married in short order and they spent the next thirty years walking, boating, traveling and sharing, happily, their life together until cancer stole her away in September of 1998.
Roy retired early from Telus to care for his wife and then bought a new boat and spent innumerable hours cruising Kootenay Lake, searching for and catching some of "the big ones". He traveled to Cranbrook regularly to visit family and worked part-time as a "runner" for Nelson Toyota and Nelson Ford, picking up and delivering vehicles from across the country and acquiring many new friends in the process. Although quiet, introspective and private Roy had many close, valued friends and his warm gentle engaging smile, his dry but very sharp sense of humour, his deep loyalty and his kind and generous spirit will long be remembered by us all.
Roy is survived by his brothers George and Terry (Paulett), his nephews Vern (Jackie) Michael and Joey (Deanna), grand nephews and nieces, his wife's niece and special friends Ken and Debbie Moldowen and daughters, plus many good friends and neighbours.
Roy was predeceased by his wife Louisa, his father Elliot Richards Harris, his mother Joyce C. Schieffert, his stepfather Vern E. Schieffert, his sister Cynthia Griffith and his brother John A. Harris. There will be no service by request. Those wishing to remember Roy may make a donation in Roy's memory to the BC Cancer Foundation Suite 600 - 686 West Broadway, Vancouver, B.C.
