Born April 9th, 1915 in Coal Creek, B.C., Martha passed away peacefully at the East Kootenay Regional Hospital in Cranbrook, B.C., at the age of 92. Martha grew up in the coal mining town of Coal Creek, pursuing a passion for all sports and even once playing for the B..C Women's Hockey Team. At the tender age of 19, Martha met and married the love of her life, Dan, a young man who wore skates so big he had to wear his shoes inside of them. In 1947 Martha and Dan relocated their house to Fernie, board by board. Martha doing much of the work while Dan was at work. For the next several years Martha would raise her young family and add to her athletic pursuits downhill skiing, curling and golf. Martha was predeceased by her husband Dan, her parents George and Annie Smith, siblings Davey, Ethel, Jack, Belle, Evelyne and William. She is survived by her brother Stan, her children John (Beryl), Shirley (Gordon) Lois (Joe) and her grandchildren; Dorrie, Darren, Patricia, Lisa and Krista and 8 great-grandchildren. Martha was a loyal and loving Mother, Grandmother and Great-Grandmother. She will be deeply missed by all whose lives she touched. In her later years, Martha could be found having coffee and playing shuffleboard with her dear friends at Joseph Creek, or seated at her lucky machine - "3rd one from the end". In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the charity of one's choice, or in person to the Casino of the Rockies. A gathering to celebrate Martha's life will be held on Friday October 12th, 2007 from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm at the Senior Citizens Drop In Centre, 562 3rd Ave., Fernie, BC.
