February 9, 1919 - December 6, 2008
Evelyn passed away December 6, 2008 at the age of 89 after a long struggle trying to recover from menigioma surgery.
Evelyn was born February 9, 1919 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She travelled with her parents and 5 brothers to homestead in Timeu, Alberta in 1928 and there she met and married Mel. They lived on his trapline/homestead for a few years, moving to Dawson Creek for work in 1943 during the construction of the Alaska Highway. She retired with Mel and the 4 youngest children to Creston in 1972.
Evelyn was very hardworking and industrious. Her hands were never idle; whether cooking for her clan, working in her garden, sewing quilts or knitting scarves and mittens. She had an incredible memory for old songs and risqué jokes and would burst into song at the most unexpected moments. She leaves behind a legacy of love, service and a cupboard full of knitted dishcloths. She is survived by seven of her 11 children; Bryan Marcil and Kim (Ron Mahon) of Creston, Lynn (Paul England) of Kelowna, Judi (George Watson) and Louise (Jochen Rode) of Cranbrook, Sheron (Ted Ballard) of Chilliwack, Sheila (Manfred Aistrich) of Mexico and 18 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Mel, eldest son Melchior (Hazel), infant Lloyd, and daughters Jean Johnson (Chris) and Gloria Murray.
The family would like to express their gratitude to Dr. Davis and Dr. Niedermeyer and the caring staff at the East Kootenay Regional Hospital. Thanks also to her loving and supportive "family" at Joseph Creek Village who made her last years comfortable and enjoyable. A special thank you for all who cared for Cutie Petutie, her beloved kitty, and to Bobbi who has offered her a new home.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the Latter Day Saints Church, 2210 2nd Street North on Thursday, December 11th at 7:30 p.m. with light refreshments to follow. Interment will take place at the Forestlawn Cemetery in Creston on Friday, November 12th at 12:00 noon.In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Creston Valley Wildlife Management Area, Box 640, Creston, British Columbia, V0B 1G0.
