Obituary of Vern Doll

1928 - 2010

It is with deep sorrow that the family of Vern Doll announces his passing on Saturday, October 9, 2010 at the East Kootenay Regional Hospital in Cranbrook, British Columbia at 82 years of age.

Vern was born on April 1, 1928 in Radisson, Saskatchewan. He was involved in minor ball as a pitching coach, volunteered in minor hockey as the assistant coach, was the president of C.A.R.S. for 8 years and was also the campaign chairman for 4 years. Vern was a member of the Cranbrook and District Ambulance Association for 60 years, 14 of which he was the president. He was the past president of the B.C Fire Chiefs Association and had a lifetime honorary membership. Vern was employed with the Cranbrook Fire Department for 37 years. He spent 5 years as a volunteer, 5 years as a regular firefighter and became the youngest fire chief in BC history at the age of 29 serving 27 years as their Fire Chief. He was active on the Credit Union Board for 12 years, 4 of those years as the Vice President. Vern was also a member of the East Kootenay SPCA Board for 16 years, with 6 of those years as a chairperson. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He played hockey and pitched competitive fastball and baseball too. Vern retired as the fire chief at the age of 55 to pursue his dream of owning and operating Nor-West Big Game Guiding and Outfitting with his partner Wally Tymchyna for 7 years. Vern was also the President of the Christmas Tree Association and operated his own tree lot for over 40 years.

Vern is survived by his loving wife Noreen Doll; his 7 children Dianne Pinchak, Linda Atwood, Dale (Ute) Doll, Melanye Doll, Daryl (Sheri) Doll, Richard Doll and Tracey (Jamey) Paarup; 19 grandchildren, and 14 great grandchildren. Vern was also survived by his sister Louise Smith who passed away 24 hours after his passing. Vern was predeceased by his father Allan Doll, his mother Arcline Doll and his brother Stan Doll.

A memorial service for Vern will be held on Friday, October 15, 2010 at 1:00 pm at the Cranbrook Alliance Church with a reception following the service. A private family Interment will be held at a later date.
