Pam,
I just learned of Tony's passing in the RPF magazine, My first job as a forest technician was in the Prince Rupert office in 1983. I worked with Tony on many boat trips and found him to be great mentor. His knowledge and confidence made it clear he had a wonderful career ahead. I also remember clearly the incredible bond you and Tony shared and I am so sorry for your loss.
Sincerely,
Sandy (Baker) Trainor

I was so very saddened to hear about Tony's passing. I only came to know Tony over this past year in working with him on the Creston wildlife area file but I feel so fortunate to have had that opportunity. He was an absolute pleasure to work with—extremely hard working, committed, energetic, respectful and a true leader in every respect. I know he will be greatly missed by the entire Creston team. My thoughts and heart go out to all his family, friends and close colleagues. I am posting 2 pictures taken in June when I met with Tony and other members of the team at Creston.

I will always think of Tony when I cross the Wardner Bridge. A short hop upstream is our secret whitefish hotspot. He was always quizzing me for fly fishing updates. About 4 springs ago, I told him of a spot on the Kootenay R that was handy to town, but only held whitefish. He was thrilled and the trip was on!
That weekend the whitefish were cooperative and we caught and kept a ridiculous mass of the bony panfish, apologies to the, C.O.s. Tony's smoker was put to good use for the rest of the weekend. He gave me a shopping bag full of kippers on Monday morning. The office smelled like a cannery. But they were very good, he definitely learned how to smoke fish when he worked in the Skeena territory.
I will always remember Tony for his appreciation of the simple joys that are part of every day. He was as happy catching a tiny whitefish as he was reeling in a trophy. If nothing was happening, he could always get a reply with his amazing redtailled hawk call. Can you hear it now?
All our love, Steve and Karen

To Pam and the rest of the family our deepest condolences. We hope knowing that Tony's many friends are thinking of you and praying for you brings you comfort and strength at this time of incredible loss.
I have many fond memories of Tony since we started working together in the early 80's in the good old Morice District in Houston. Tony's moral and work ethic were second to none. No matter the issue, he always looked for the high road. He attacked life with an unbridled sense of passion, whether it was family, work, sports or hunting.
We all used to tease him when he would don his camo gear, face paint with branches sticking out of his head gear doing the low crawl thru the brush along the Morice River, in search of moose or deer. We affectionatley called him "Rambo" yes even to his face, once we made sure he was unarmed.
He was known as a leader and champion within the Forest Service and took great pride in being a member that family as well as his own. He wore the oval with pride and did the organization proud.
We share in your loss and your grief Pam, We know in our hearts Tony will always be watching over you and the kids. Love Rod and Diane DeBoice

I deeply respected and admired Tony and always appreciated, and felt grateful for, the time he took to provide input and guidance to my work.

We were very sad to hear of Tony's passing over the holidays. We had the privilege of working with Tony in Cranbrook for several years. In hindsight I was very lucky that Tony's door was always open and I was always able to share my thoughts and ideas with him.
I had seen him several times since moving to Kamloops when he came for meetings. Someone here started to introduce him to me, and Tony said oh I know who Megan is if she'll ever forgive me...because he had had to give me my "effected letter" in the district back in 1998. I was surprised that he thought about that. I had never been upset with Tony about the letter, I had hoped that he was trying hard not to actually impact me...but stuff happens. Yes Tony, everything worked out for me.
Miss you

We were saddened to hear of Tony's passing. Both Helena and I worked at the North Coast District Office when Tony was the Ops Mgr there. In fact he was my was my first Ops Mgr and set the bar very high for Mgrs in the Forest Service. I am remembering Tony when we played in Oldtimers and in the Standfields Hockey Cup tournaments. We both loved to hunt Ducks and geese, attended Ducks Unlimited Banquets, shared many boats trips and a lot a laughs.
Walter (Warehouseman) and Crystal Lindenblatt , also pass on their sorrow. We got talking about happier times back in the mid-90s when Tony had moved up and over to a Mgrs job in Houston. Walter and a couple of friends had the old FS Ranger Cabin booked at Mcbride Lake during Moose Season. No moose in the area and they had not seen a thing. Tony being Tony kept tabs on the lack of progress they were having and made a trip down to see them at least twice, finally persuading them to move into an area where there was at least recent activity. Reluctantly they took his advice went over or off the Buck Creek Road and were successful.
Our condolences to Pam and family.

It is difficult to adequately pay tribute to Tony and his family. His passing is an undescribable, heart-breaking loss.
Tony was insightful, focused, practical, widely informed and respectful. He was deeply committed to serving his family and the Province of BC. He was thankful for the life and blessings he was given, and he worked hard to build on that foundation. Tony earned his keep.
Tony stayed true to his convictions and the facts regardless of the storms of the day. He remains respected for his integrity, intelligence, decisiveness and work ethic. I am so grateful for the experience of working for Tony for the past three years. Thank you for everything, boss, I'll miss you. Jeremy Zandbergen

I never had the pleasure of meeting Tony in person but I did meet with him many times over the phone in my role as legal advisor to the Ministry of Forests (and what ever subsequent itterations it has gone through since). I've "known" him since the early '90s. He was always very pleasant, well-prepared and, above all, practical. He always took whatever time was necessary to assist me in my preparations, explaining the nuances of forestry so that even I could understand. In later years, I would receive queries from him and I always knew that an email from Tony would be well thought out, comprehensive and attempting to achieve a practical outcome. And Tony was sufficiently well versed in the legal stuff to have already sifted through the obvious answers - it was a rare event that I could answer one of his questions off the top of my head. His experience will be sorely missed. I would like to have known him better. - Jan Hill, Legal Services Branch, Ministry of Justice

I would have first met Tony when he worked in the neighboring district of Ft St James back in the 80's. I'd always considered him a true natural resource management professional - always seeking balance among competing uses - taking a strong interest in learning. Never jaded or cynical, Tony was a pleasure to work with.
I so much appreciate that I got to participate in office tours, meetings and an evening meal and drinks with Tony in early November in Cranbrook last year. It was a very good time.

Condolences to family and friends. I am deeply saddened to learn of this news. Oh the memories, such fun and rich memories of times spent growing up with Tony. Catching frogs and salamanders and the time he brought a "pet crow" to school in grade two. Tony put that crow up on my shoulder to show me how tame it was. It was tame but not house broken the back of my shirt bore witness. Stories around the lacrosse arena or at barn playing hockey are plenty. All good stories because Tony was always a good person. Mischievous at times, but always good. He could do "Grease Lightening" with such style John Travolta was envious. Tony packed in a lot of living in those 54 years more than most 3 times his age. Yes I said 3 times his age. He had 3 times the enthusiasm and more than enough energy to match.
When all is said and done it comes down to one question. "Was I a good person?" Yes Tony you are a good person, a good husband, a good father and a good friend. More so, Ever more so.

My condolences to the family. Even though I hardly knew Tony I have a lot of respect for Tony and think of him often as he has had a positive impact on my life.
You see Tony interviewed me in my hometown of St. John's, Newfoundland in the summer of 1995 as part the BC Forest Service cross Canada Recruitment. Shortly after he offered me a job at the North Coast Forest District in Prince Rupert where he was the Operation Manager.
Not being familiar with British Columbia I was uncertain if Prince Rupert was a good choice but Tony assured me that this was a great place for me to start my carrer with the BCFS, (and that it didn't rain as much as people said).
Much to my surprise when I arrived in Rupert to start work 2 months later, Tony had already moved on to take a promotion in Cranbrook (and it rained for steady for 8 days)!
It was 12 years later until I actually saw Tony again. We met at his office in Cranbrook regarding a file that I was working on. He remembered me and we had great chat about what he was thinking when he hired me. Clearly Tony had a special ablility to read and understand people and saw the best in people. He asked me how taking the job in Prince Rupert worked out for me and I told him it worked out great with no regrets. Tony admitted that he did down play the rainfall amounts but figured it was worth it if he could entice me to be part of his team.
The years I spend working in the North Coast Forest District stand out in my mind as the best of times. I only wish I got to work and get to know Tony more. Thank You Tony from the Nolander family.

Pam & Family -
My thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult and tumultuous time. It saddened me to hear that Tony had passed and brought up a lot of emotions and memories. Tony was the first District Manager I had when becoming a member of the FS family, he was also my first formal mentor in the FS. I learned a lot from Tony and enjoyed the challenges he put in front of me. He led by example, always doing a superb job of being informed, making decisions and working tirelessly to do what he thought was best for the District. Tony was a highly professional individual, but I had the opportunity on occasion to see a different side of him - the discussions about dogs, the joking about my (now) husband (also a new FS employee at that time) and the Friday afternoon drinks at Mission Hills golf club just down the road from the office. Tony left a mark on a lot of individuals and he will be greatly missed.

One of the best parts of the Ministry of Forests is getting to know colleagues from around the province. Having shared a similar career path with Tony which passed through places like Fort St, James, I always looked forward to catching up with him at meetings and late night debates on what the Canucks needed to finally win the Cup. If Bob Seger had known Tony, I'm sure he would approve of using some of these lyrics.
His hands were steady
His eyes were clear and bright
His walk had purpose
His steps were quick and light
And he held firmly
To what he felt was right
