1918 - 2010
Winnie May Bennett of Cranbrook, British Columbia died peacefully on Saturday, January 2, 2010 at Joseph Creek Care Village.
Winnie was predeceased by her husband of 55 years, Norman, in 1994; her parents August William Rathlef (1944) and Winnie May Giddings (1978); and her brother Robert William Rathlef (2005). She is survived by her sister Elizabeth (Sigurd) Peterson; her two children: Leigh August (Carol) Bennett of Nanaimo and Vicky Ann (Leslie) McDonald of Cranbrook; four grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
Winnie was born in Nanaimo, British Columbia on April 7, 1918. Winnie and Norm were married in 1939. They worked in the family electrical business, ran a corner store and raised a family in Naniamo until 1962 when they moved to Victoria. Winnie lived in the family home at Prospect Lake until 1996 when she moved to nearby Sidney. In 2002 she moved to Cranbrook.
Winnie managed her family and her finances, always managing to save for annual holiday trips to California, the Yukon or just Cowichan Lake. Winnie also worked and volunteered in the Victoria area. In the 1980's she and Norm enjoyed their annual hunting trips in Gold Creek, visiting family and their Cranbrook friends.
The family would like to thank the staff at Joseph Creek Care Village for their kindness and compassion. A private family service is planned.
