Robert Lawrence “Rob” Hunter

June 22, 1955 – September 22, 2019

It is with exceptionally heavy hearts that the family of Robert (Rob) Lawrence Hunter announces his passing at the Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria, at the age of 64. Rob was born in Cranbrook in 1955 and was the eldest son of Jessie and Larry Hunter. As a child, he loved to play in the woods that surrounded the family home, with his brothers. Having his grandparents close by, as active participants in his daily life, was important to Rob.

Rob got his early education in Cranbrook and later went on to attend the University of Victoria where he received two degrees, in psychology and social work. Rob worked for the government in Victoria as a social worker. In later years, he worked for Phoenix as a family counsellor specializing in working with families and Youth at Risk. That subject was close to his heart, as he had experienced difficulties in life as a teenager. With guidance and positive role models in his life, he made the necessary changes to become successful in his future roles as a career man and father.

Rob spent most of his adult life living in Victoria, but kept in close contact with family and friends in Cranbrook, even playing online Scrabble daily with a favourite aunt, Sparky! He came back to Cranbrook every summer, camping and enjoying the outdoors. One of the most important reasons for ‘coming home’ was to spend time with his mom in her garden. Another highlight of these trips was huckleberry picking with brother, Clayton, and enjoying the huckleberry jam pancake breakfasts that would follow.

Rob was a kind and gentle man who was a collector of all things. He attributed his love of the outdoors, gardening, and cooking to his Mom and Grandparents. One of the greatest joys of Rob’s life was his son Jordan. He loved to share his pride in Jordan by showing photos and stories of his accomplishments with family and friends.

He will be sadly missed by his best friend and soul mate, Darlene Lloyd, son Jordan Hunter, brothers Clayton (Sandra) and Rodney Hunter, aunts Ilene Miller and Bev Sparks, cousins Rick (Lesley) Lowe, Randy Lowe, Lennie Lowe, Brad Miller, Ken (Lana) Miller, Karen (Rob) Johnston, David (Heather) Miller, Lary (Laura) Sparks, Leslie Stephens, Kim (Geoff) Sparks, as well as many extended family members and close friends.

Rob was predeceased by both of his parents (Jessie and Larry Hunter), beloved Uncle Bob Sparks, former partner Gabe Damke, and many aunts and uncles.

A graveside service for Rob has been planned for November 16th at 12:00, with reception to follow at McPherson’s Funeral Services. Please feel free to post photos and/or memories of Rob at earthsoption.ca
