“Take me home.
I willingly surrender.
I shall not fear, for you are with me.
Thank you, Lord” ~ Marianne Williamson
It is with deep sadness that we announce the at home passing of Shirley after a courageous battle against cancer.
Born in Kimberley Shirley spent the majority of her childhood and adult life living in Lower Blarchmont.
Shirley started teaching in a lumber camp in Gold Creek and then moved to Windermere one year before setting up her own private kindergarten which ran for six years in the Moose Hall. She worked for three years with physically challenged children at Pinewood school as well with the primary grades at Meadowbrook, Marysville and Blarchmont schools.
She was an active member of the Anglican Church having played the organ for many years at Sunday and various services. Shirley took an active interest in volunteering with Kimberley Food Bank and shared her charitable giving with many organizations focused on children, health care and animal welfare.
Friendship was an important part of Shirley’s life especially that of the close-knit group called ‘The Sewing Circle’ who have been regularly getting together for over 40 years. Her love of travel, music and gardening brought many other wonderful people into her circle as well.
By far her greatest love was her family. She is survived by son Leigh (Donna), daughter Teresa (Don Dewitt) and daughter-in-law Barb, grandchildren Brett (Heidi), Kara (Eric Smyth), Craig, Rob & Katie Dewitt; great grand-children Sage & Easton Grainger and Brynlee & Theo Smyth. Also surviving is sister Arlene (Al MacDonald) and sister-in-law Catherine Hamilton plus many nephews and nieces.
Shirley was predeceased by her husband Raymond, son Russell, parents Ralph & Mary Whalley, sisters & brothers-in-law Louise & Manny Beauchamp and Bernice & Ernie Aube.
At Shirley’s request a graveside memorial service followed by lunch at the Kimberley Anglican Church will take place in the Spring.
The family wishes to acknowledge the exceptional care, compassion and support given by Dr. Anneline Du Preez, EKRH ER & 3rd floor teams, Kimberley Home Care Support and the KHCA Loan Cupboard.
In lieu of flowers please donate to a charity of your choice.
