Hans was, in my eyes, the heart and soul of the small German community of Kimberley. He epitomized hard work, sportsmanship, graciousness, good humor and always, encouragement . When I worked or played soccer alongside him, he was quick to let you know know that you had done something well with a bit of a grunt or groan, or something not, with the all familiar slang "sheizen"!!! He was a master teacher and it was no surprise to me, that is where he continued after the "Gasthaus". I miss watching the games of cards in the restaurant , the sound-crack of a beer bottle opening, the whir of fans over the grills, and especially the scream from Hans, " SHEIZEN!!! when he didn't get his hand in cards when my dad screwed up!!! Love you so much.!!! All my condolences Love. Sean Ederer

Of course very sorry to hear this news. We have many fond memories of Hans from working at COTR, from social events both inside and outside the college, and from general good times along the way. He was truly an indomitable spirit and will be greatly missed. All the best to Tanis and family, from Gary Clohan and Chris Olsen.

Sorry to hear this sad news. A great chef, great mentor and all round great man. He helped many achieve their goals of becoming chefs. Tanis and family. Although we have never met, I just had to send my condolences on hearing of Hans' death. Hans was one of my late husband Ted's best friends for many years when we lived in Kimberley. They spent countless hours together on the soccer field. playing, coaching, and reffing. As a couple, Ted and I spent many an evening joying the wonderful food and atmosphere of the Gasthaus with Hans, Peter and Kurt. It remains to this day my favorite restaurant because of the happy memories. What I remember most about Hans was his ever present smile; I don't know that I ever saw him cranky or unhappy!
