Doreen Stewart

Obituary of Doreen Stewart

Mary Doreen Stewart, age 84, passed away peacefully April 4, 2020 at the East Kootenay Regional Hospital. Doreen is loved and dearly missed by her husband, William Paul Stewart, two sons, Grant Stewart (Breanna and Shae) and Greg Stewart (Kya and Mae) as well as many family and friends across Canada.

Doreen was born March 25, 1936 in Elderslie Township, Ontario to Grace and Alexander McFarlane and her early life was shaped by the love and friendship of her three sisters, Evelyn (deceased), Jeanette, and Margaret, (or ‘the sisters’ as they call themselves), and four brothers, Lorne(deceased), Bruce, Jack, and Douglas. Doreen met and married the love of her life and her best friend, Paul with whom she spent an amazing 52 years of marriage.

Doreen and Paul married in 1967 in Hamilton, welcoming Grant to the family in 1970 and Greg in 1971. It was not long after they were married that their love of the mountains brought the family west to Calgary and eventually to Fairmont, B.C., where they spent many years at the family cabin before building their forever home and retiring.  This home gave them a view of the mountains they love and a prized garden where they spent countless hours. Their life together was fueled by a passion for the outdoors, skiing, hiking, travelling the world, golfing, and sharing love, laughter and a good many spirit with family and life-long friends. The Columbia Valley was home for so many years, and Doreen’s memory will undoubtedly live on in the beauty of this special place.

Doreen was a loving wife, dedicated mother and she treasured her grandchildren above all, embracing every moment she had with them. She especially loved her role as grandma, sewing, baking and crafting; her hands were rarely still, and her grandkids have many blankets and quilts which they treasure. She had a way of bringing a sense of style and elegance to everything she did, whether hosting dinner parties or a casual morning breakfast with family. Her personality was infectious, and her quick wit always brought a smile to the people she loved.

It has been a difficult few weeks for the family knowing that they are unable to lay Doreen to rest at this time, and Paul, Grant and Greg are thankful for the calls and visits from many dear friends and family. We look forward to celebrating Doreen’s extraordinary life as soon as the situation permits.  In the meantime, please consider honoring Doreen by donating to the Columbia Valley Food Bank in her honour.
