Our family remembers David fondly as the younger, jolly joker brother of Gerry and son of much loved Jenny and Paul Bachynski. To think of this world without his laughter and endless teasing is to have a void that cannot be filled. Heaven is a jollier place with David there

I was absolutely gob-smacked to learn (by e-mail directly from himself) of Dave's cancer diagnosis. I was, and am, deeply saddened by his sudden passing.
Our association/friendship goes back quite a while. Dave and I met as provincial members of a federal/provincial/territorial RTAC ASC committee, probably in the late 1980s or early 1990s. He represented BC and I was the rep from NL, then PEI, and then MB. After he moved on and was no longer a member of that committee, we kept in touch by e-mail and the occasional phone call, at the expense of one government or another.
Except for most recently, I thoroughly enjoyed every encounter I had with the man; in person, on the phone, or by e-mail; regardless of whether we were seriously working on some important national transportation issue (today they all seem, and are, in fact, trivial), or if we were intentionally being silly. We often looked forward to enjoying baseball games together, either his beloved NY Yankees or the Goldeyes here in Winnipeg.
Alas.
I last saw Dave in Spring 2009 when he accepted my invitation to attend an evening event at a CTRF conference in Victoria and I was pleased to buy him a beer (or 2) on the conference account. Our last phone conversation was the week before he passed. I'm sorry to say it took me 2 weeks to muster the courage to phone him. Regrets. Apologies. Apparently some of his former co-workers had arranged for a video message from Brian Cashman. Dave was as thrilled as he could be. I have to admit I didn't dare tell Dave I had never heard of Cashman. He's only the GM of the Yankees. Great stuff, BC Highways folks!
Dave was a dear friend and I will always remember him. Whenever I enter "d" or "ba" in the address box of an e-mail, Dave's address is at the top of the list to be auto-filled.
Sincerest condolences and best regards to Kris and the family.

Fond, fond memories of my friend Dave. We first met at Transport Canada in 1978. He was “PAOP-DB” (only Transport Canada folks would know what that means). We were always friends since then, and we spent many years sharing good (mostly good) jokes and playing practical jokes on each other as often as we could. He called me “Rudy” (that’s my middle name), and I called him “my hero”. Truth is, he was my hero – a wonderful man whom I will always remember. Deepest condolences to his family.

What terribly sad news. As your "other side of the wall" next-door neighbours we already miss you after so many years, and now feel very sad for your loss. Please know that we are thinking of you and send you our deepest condolences.

Dear Belinda and Michael my thoughts are with you and the entire family as you grieve the loss of your beloved father.
I first met your Dad when I joined Transport Canada in Vancouver in 1974 and was delighted later to reunite with you all as friends and neighbours in Victoria. In more recent years David's path would cross mine frequently again during the work week as we would bump into each other outside our respective offices on Broughton Street. His warm and welcoming smile and wry humor was always heartfelt and appreciated.
I include a photo taken in the summer of 1975 during a bike trip with various colleagues through the Delta bird sanctuary. A fond memory of a very special summer I have carried through the years. Blessings and love always, Patti McDonald

I was saddened to read of Dave's passing today. He and I grew up together in Kimberley and I have fond memories of Dave and his brother Gerry, especially through our connection with the Selkirk high school/Rotary band. I offer condolences to Dave's family during this difficult time.

I first met Dave in November 1991 when he interviewed me for a job with the Ministry of Transportation and Highways, as it was then called. I was just out of university and this interview led me to my career in the provincial civil service. He gave me my first break, and then went on to hire me two more times as I bounced around the civil service a bit.
He was a mentor to me and a truly great friend.
That first meeting was marked by his amazing sense of humour. I had been asked to bring proof of my education to the interview, so I brought my degree carefully enclosed in its mortarboard folder. Dave had a lot of fun with it, culminating in asking me to sign a piece of paper so he could compare my handwriting with the signatures on the degree. Still, he hired me ... and I am where I am today carrying a significant level of gratitude for Dave and the many kindnesses he showed me.
