Obituary of Harold Nixon

Please share a memory of Harold to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

1926 - 2010

It is with great sorrow that the family of Harold Nixon announces his passing on Friday, December 24, 2010 at 84 years of age.

Harold always made a point of putting the needs and wants of others ahead of his own. He loved to fish. His fishing trips were usually not that productive, but that never discouraged him from making his next fishing trip. Harold also loved to "tinker" with anything mechanical or electronic. He could always make a car run smoother, a lawn mower run faster or a TV picture clearer. Not many people could make an air compressor by combining and old propane tank, an old lawn mower engine and an old furnace motor. Nor could many people build a fold up family vacation travel trailer from a Popular Mechanics magazine. Harold was always tackling these and similar projects for himself and for others no matter how big, small or complicated they were.

Harold was born and raised in the East Kootenays growing up in a trapping family and working besides his father and brothers in the business. He worked for Crestbrook Forest Industries (Tembec) for 43 years holding a variety of roles in the sawmills, planer mills, bush and log yards.

Harold leaves behind his loving and devoted wife Theresa "Terry" of 59 years; brother Roy (Joyce); son Garth (Linda); son Gord (Karen); son Lorne (Kim); grandchildren: Josh (Jill), Allison, Jeffrey and Danielle; great granddaughter Avery; nephew Karl (Linda) Gropp; and niece Pat (Barry) Dodich. Harold was predeceased by his parents Wilber and Emma; brothers Ralph and Fred; sister Amy; daughter baby girl Nixon and grandson Joel.

Harold's family would like to thank Dr. Andi Schiebenstock for her tireless efforts, care, and compassion while treating Harold, and to the fantastic and caring nursing, care and medical staff at the Cranbrook Hospital Dialysis unit and Joseph Creek Care Village for keeping Harold comfortable, in good spirits, and being by his side throughout his battle.

A gathering in honour of Harold's life will take place at the Eagles Hall in Cranbrook on Saturday, January 8, 2011 from 1:00 pm until 4:00 pm. His Celebration of Life Service will be held at 2:00 pm at the Eagles Hall during the gathering. Those wishing to make a memorial donation in honour of Harold may do so to the: East Kootenay Regional Hospital Dialysis Unit, c/o 13 - 24th Avenue North, Cranbrook, British Columbia, V1C 3H9 or The Kidney Foundation of Canada, 200, 4940 - Canada Way, Burnaby, British Columbia, V5G 4K6.
