1923 - 2010

It is with deep sorrow that the family of James William Scanland announces his passing on Monday, December 27, 2010 at the East Kootenay Regional Hospital in Cranbrook at 87 years of age.

Jim was born on April 17, 1923 in Cranbrook. He was very involved with the community. He was on the Church Committee for 20 years as People Warden and Rectors Warden and a Layminister. He was a Legion member. Jim square danced and called square dancing for 40 years. Jim also was president of the Chamber of Commerce. Jim loved his music and he entertained seniors groups with his singing. Jim was a cub leader and a soccer coach and helped get the skateboard park going for the kids. Jim joined the army January 1942 and remained in service until 1945. He was with the Fort Garry Horse Regiment when they landed on D-Day. He also had a passion for carving and woodwork. Many of these projects became gifts once he was done his crafting. Jim loved camping and covered many miles with his RV. He also loved golf. Jim worked as a brakeman with CPR from 1947 - 1956. He built and operated the Ponderosa Motel for 10 years. He also was self-employed in the trucking industry, construction industry, a service station and as a school bus driver from 1976 - 1989.

Jim is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Mary; 3 sons: Ralph (Roxanne) of Cranbrook, Gerry (Judy) of Sylvan Lake, Alberta and Dennis (Janna) of Calgary, Alberta; 8 grandchildren 10 great grandchildren; and his brother Ken of Rock Creek, British Columbia. He was predeceased by his daughter Carolyn, great granddaughter Cassie, his sisters Dorothy and Kathryn and his brother John.

A memorial service for Jim will take place at Christ Church Anglican on Friday, December 31, 2010 at 1:00 pm. His Interment will follow in Westlawn Cemetery. Those wishing to make a memorial donation in honour of Jim may do so to the: Canadian Cancer Society, 19 - 9th Avenue South, Cranbrook, British Columbia, V1C 2L9.
