I met Derrick in grade 11 and we instantly became friends and were constantly together in high school. We sat together in class, hung out a lot, went to prom in the same group, and continued hanging out into when I left for college. I was super terrified of cars and driving, but I always felt extremely safe whenever Derrick was driving, even if it was fast. He came with me to Calgary to get my citizenship. We spent the summers always together at every event, he even showed me quadding. He was my first guy best friend, and I could tell him everything. He had a big soft heart, an ear to listen, wasn't judgmental and had a great sense of humour!
Our friendship stopped after college, after a big fight when he got some not-so-good friends. Soon I moved away.
I've met a lot of people since but I never had another guy best friend that I could connect with and talk to the same way again. I'm afraid he was too soft for the world, which is quick to judge and discard those who don't fit in the box of their ideals. That many people took advantage of him and led him astray but did not protect him when needed. I'm sorry that I never had a chance to really meet your parents Derrick, as I can't imagine their pain. Years later, there is still a space in my heart that your absence left void. <3 I will keep praying that Christ gives your eternal soul rest, peace, love and comfort.
