Obituary of Tom Taylor

Please share a memory of Tom to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

January 13th, 1940 - February 10th, 2022

It is with heavy hearts that the family of Tom Taylor announce his passing on Thursday, February 10th, 2022, after a sudden and brief illness. He leaves behind the love of his life Dorothy, together for 61 years, daughter Elana (Mark) Backman, daughter Gayle, and son Terry. He also leaves his grandsons, Geoffrey, Corey (Cassy), Taylor (Leah), PJ , Christie, and great grandsons Kaden, Wesson and Bowen.

Starting out in the work force at a young age in the coal mines, he then completed an apprenticeship, successfully becoming a Red Seal Machinist. He moved the family to Kimberley where he worked for Cominco for a number of years, but his dream was always to become a teacher. He moved on to UVic and graduated with a Master’s Degree. He taught many years between Selkirk Secondary and McKim Middle School. Known by his students as T-Square, it always brought Tom joy when former students acknowledged him on the street. Upon retirement he and Dorothy and their beloved dog Czar Boy spent as much time as they could up at their cabin. In the summer their days were spent fishing, hiking, and picking mushrooms, in the winter they snow mobiled, cross country skied and snow shoed. And it wasn’t unusual for them to spend Christmas holidays and Easter holidays up there as well.

We would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the doctors and nurses of the East Kootenay Regional Hospital Emergency Department and the doctors and nurses that tended to Dad on the 3rd floor. Further, we would like to send a special thank you to Jodi, Dad’s nurse, who was with us every step of the way on Dad’s journey, who treated all of us with kindness and compassion, a true angel of nursing.

There will be no service, as per Tom’s wishes

And I want to walk with you my whole life through”.
