Obituary for Dr. Allan W. Daniels

A beloved husband, brother, father, grandpa, great grandpa, uncle, doctor, pastor, friend and long-time resident of Cranbrook, British Columbia passed away on May 23, 2022.  He will be deeply missed.

Born on October 4, 1943 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, he took tremendous pride in being a Prairie boy.  A natural athlete, he honed his hockey, football and curling skills in his beloved East Kildonan.  Some of his proudest sporting moments were earned playing football with his beloved West End Rams and the University of Manitoba Bisons.

He studied sciences at St. John’s College at the University of Manitoba and earned his medical degree from the University of Manitoba in 1967, where he received the Sara Meltzer medal for the best record in all years of medical school. In 1968, he completed his medical residency and married Mary A. Howe, the love of his life, and then began a lengthy medical career in northern Saskatchewan, northern Manitoba, and south-eastern British Columbia.

Jesus, family, medicine, and people were his greatest loves and he dedicated his life to sharing the hope he had in Christ through the way he did his work and how he cared for others. His commitment to Christian education gave him an opportunity to invest in the lives of 100’s of young people, many who remained in touch with him years after graduation and on whose lives he had a meaningful impact.

He was a man of simple pleasures – a good home-cooked meal, homemade chocolate chip cookies, a quiet paddle in the canoe, a trout or salmon on the line,  a “good deal” at the grocery store, a hockey or football game, singing enthusiastically in church or enjoying a beautiful view of the Rocky Mountains. He embraced life full-on, with enthusiasm, grit, tenacity, and a tremendous work ethic.  A man of integrity, loyalty, courage and compassion, he never was afraid to show people he loved them.

He will be forever missed by his beloved wife Mary, his sister Jeanette (Peter) Fabricius and family, brother Greg (Irma) Daniels, daughter Barbara Russell, son Nathan (Karen) Daniels, daughter Karen Daniels, grand-children Amanda (Lindsey) Montgomery, Ryan Russell, Luke Daniels and Caleb Daniels, and great-grand-daughter Amara Montgomery, as well as many friends, colleagues and patients.

Special thanks are given to the nurses of the Renal Unit at the East Kootenay Regional Hospital who gave him tremendous care for the three years he was on dialysis, the nurses of the ICU and the Palliative Care Units, family friend Jeannette Lopez who cooked many great meals for Mary and Allan in recent years and enabled them to live on their own, his long-time friend and colleague Dr. Glen McIver, long-time friends David Manarey and Harvey Bombardier and the many others who came to visit or sent notes of encouragement in his last days.

Donations may be made to the Friendship Ministry for adults with special needs or the Renal Unit of the East Kootenay Regional Hospital.
