Without a clue, Bob would try to connect with animals.
For someone that was the worlds best outdoorsman, champion for wilderness, ecology, and conservation of lands near and far, he was the worst at husbandry.
I actually witnessed him getting in an argument with bees. He had a hive on top of his home in Creston, and actually thought those bees were going to listen to him.
One of my favorite stories about Bob against an animal occurred in Ghana, 1972.
My brothers and sisters were always bursting into his home, uninvited and unannounced.
On one of the countless time we took this rude behavior, our pet baboon, Zazoom was along with us.
She just went wild in his house! Her worst trick was jumping onto his desk and swiping all of his research papers onto the floor. Not to be outdone, she pooped right in the center of the desk, then bared her teeth when Bob got over the shock and went for her.
Bob grabbed Zazoom by her leg, hung her upside-down and whopped the hell out of her baboon ass.
We sure as hell got our pet and ourselves out of his bungalow.
It wasn't just the baboon. I can remember lots of times when he misunderstood horses, dogs, even well, bees.
Bob, and all of his adventures, misadventures, and down right talents, will be stuff of legends.
I loved him so.
My best wishes, extremely sharp grief for your loss. I mean that from the bottom of my heart.
Love,
Anne

I have many fond memories of the man from the 70s through to recent years...bee-keeping in Sirdar, horse-hauling at Ta Ta Creek, guiding in the Rockies, strolling along the Kootenay River... We'll miss you Bob.
