I am so very saddened by the Learning of Ian's passing. I was probably 14 or 15 when I met Ian in Cranbrook at my school.... He was There Scouting to drum up an extra hand at the Ranch... Now this wasn't a Normal Bunch of Kids on a field triP....he musta had 10 kids all green and as slick as mud...I was probably the only one who knew what work meant and I Lived just up the road... And I seen Colin and Ian is looking at me head tipped sideways... This wasn't going to be good. Colin says gotta minute? Yeah sure ....Ian Softly and seriously asked...Did You Take a gun from the House...?? I said No and wouldn't unless you asked me to. Colin has to find out which Kid stole this pistol or bigger trouble is going to Happen. The next DaY at school Colin approaches Me and sits across from me... Figure it out I quietly ask.... Yeah we got it. kid tried selling it...But we caught up to Him...Sounds Like IaN might have a couple Days of stuff to do every week if You keep up with school work.... Now I wasn't Your NORMAL kinda Farm hand... And I Had a sideswipe shaved Head... Damen HALF HIS HEAD Heanski would be my formal Branding one Morning as they had a good laugh about my HairCut...and I never lived it down...and I Loved Ian like a Surrogate DaD...My Life is Richer Having Met You...Ian Thane wrote on a business Card after working that school Year chopping frozen chicken from Fort Steele and FEEDING The Fastest Animals on the planet...The Perigrin Falcons and his Hawks and Eagles and Maybe a special Bird...one he and I may have Created ...I Never got to find out because I would move to Victoria searching for my Relatives...but that is anouther story... And through the years gone past I have intended to get in touch with him HAVING FOND Memories of Ian and those parting words he gave me I Have always wished AND Wanted to give them back to him... I Will the RAVENS Spirit find him on the baha and would sing those words back to him and do the crazy laughing raven dance with a shock of white feathers on the Left corner of its Head would Raven Spirit find him a Loving Soul that was gifted by the heavens and all who knew him could not deny the world is a better place Having Met You IaN Thane.

I went looking online for word of Ian Thane tonight as I'm returning to the East Kootenays for a visit. Around 1980 I lived at Smith Prairie Ranch (Rutherford Ranch) just outside of Wasa B.C. Dr. Ian Thane came out to deliver calves. I was in my late 20's and fresh from suburban areas outside Vancouver. I was on calving duty one afternoon and phoned Ian with concerns about a cow. Over the course of the afternoon he told me how to use a long plastic glove and check the cow's unborn calf. Eventually, by phone, he figured out the cow had a twisted uterus. I tracked down someone to come haul her to Cranbrook and got to watch a cesarean resulting in a beautiful large bull calf. There were other deliveries and Ian was always kind and helpful to this new country dweller. He offered a special to neuter/spay a batch of farm kittens too. I believe he ended up with a kitten living in his walls for a time after that!
I knew it would be a long shot to find him after all these years. I moved from the area long ago. But when I thought of Cranbrook, Wasa, or Windermere over the years I always thought of Ian. He was a great vet and a wonderful man.

I guess I wrote to long, the website kicked me out. So to be shorter, I had a special feeling for Ian he was the only vet that could look after big animals and helped us many times. He was a true cowboy. Mine were horses and great danes. Had the enjoyment of spending some quality time with him as a friend and will miss him always. He was a true cowboy. I always enjoyed his company

According to my father Jack Brown formerly of Ta Ta Creek Ian was the best large animal vet he ever knew.
