I think we were in either 4th or 5th grade...and on the eastsouth side of J A Laird elementary school
Can't remember if it was recess or lunch hr,but the wind picked up and produced a small devils throat...and there runs Cathy towards it ,only to kinda dance with it...a couple twirls and it was gone...but before it disappeared, Cathy is still twirling with out her dance partner...and she was slightly dizzy and disappointed.
But she returned to us with her eyes wide with excitement, even if it were only fer about 45 seconds in total...
And a great big grin from ear to ear,and still trying to dance and spin...
Everyone asked if she was OK,Cathy still on cloud 9 with her performance, sluffed it off and said,'other than dust in her eyes and still slightly dizzy,I'm good yea'

I want to offer my condolences to Cathy's family and friends for their loss. I only just met Cathy in early January this year, when she and friends Sharon & Sheena - strangers to me at that point - rang my doorbell and asked to see inside my house. I live in the Vancouver house that her great-grandparents bought in 1907(ish), where her grandparents raised her mother & aunts, and where Cathy herself lived with her grandmother while attending university. I explained that although I've now lived here for 25 years, I consider myself the current custodian of her family's home. I was very happy to show them around and really enjoyed hearing Cathy's memories of living here. She left a very positive impression after that visit and with our subsequent email exchange, and was someone I wish I could have known better.

It would be impossible to sum up everything my Auntie Cathy is to me. She was my best teacher even if I wasn't her best student. Learning how to drive in her Tercel, getting me my first job living with her in Whistler or washing wolf skat in the basement when we lived with my grandparents well I was in high school. She always showed me to stand up for what you believe in even if it isn't a easy thing to do. I am sure part of my love for science, nature and traveling are due to her influence. I will always be grateful to have had such a strong female to look up to in my life. I hope wherever she is she will have found peace and know she is loved.

Q: What will you never forget about Catherine?
A: My dear friend Cathy, aka Blue Eyes in our household, and fondly remembered as a beautiful soul in my heart and mind.
We met in Kindergarten and became fast friends. You were part of the
"Westside Crew" and you were one of my favourite ski buddies growing up. You and I were the girls that could easily keep up with the boys, and often were even faster and just as adventurous.
When I close my eyes I see those beautiful, sparkly blue eyes, your expressive face, your paintings & photos. I hear your laughter, always spilling out and warming the space and hearts of those near you. I hear your beautiful voice and your guitar. I feel your love of life, family, and friends. I sense your love and respect of nature, language, art, culture, relationships and the world.
I may have slowed down out on the slopes but you will always be with me and in my mind, we will still be barreling down the Show Off, Fritzes, Oldtimer or the Horseshoe with the wind in our faces and smiles and laughter every single moment.
You were a force to be reckoned with - but in all the right ways. We were friends until the very end and I'm grateful to have spent special time with you during the last year.
Safe travels my friend & we will see you on the other side.
Forever and always....

As I close my eyes, I can see before me the worn path leading from my home to the corner of my pasture, and me ducking between the barbwire fence, being careful not to catch my clothes or scratch my legs on the barbed wire, as I head towards Cathy's. But I do not remember a well-worn path across Cathy's pasture, and it puzzles me...until I remember having to take a different path across Cathy's field each time I visited her to give her cow, Missy, as wide of a birth as possible and to give me as much of a running head start as possible.
I remember one of the days when Missy gave chase to Cathy and me when we were walking across the pasture. We ran...and I remember reaching Cathy's gate that led into her yard, breathless from running, only to turn around, horrified to see that Missy had pinned Cathy up against the barn. I was screaming at Missy, but Cathy had a quiet determined look on her face as she squiggled between Missy's two horns.
I am not sure how Cathy managed to wiggle out from Missy, however, I was amazed at her courage in doing so; and now, fifty-some years later, there I was again, looking at Cathy, and admiring her courage in dealing with the challenges that were now lying ahead of her.
Throughout our childhood, we were lucky in a sense, of the freedom we had growing up. Meeting up on hot summer evenings with our neighbours to play kick-the-can or scrub until dusk, when we would all magically disperse, each going our separate ways, heading for home. To skating on the homemade rink in the winter and then sitting around the fire to warm our frozen toes. As I remember, I can see Cathy's beautiful smile, hear her contagious laugh, and see the way her eye crinkled in the corners, making her eyes sparkle and turn an even more brilliant blue.
Cathy, you have a new journey ahead of you. Each time I return to the Valley, I will listen on the wind for your beautiful voice singing, and hope to hear your laugh echoing through the canyons.
Rest in peace, my ol' friend.
Patty

I was fortunate to have the great opportunity to work with Cathy on the Ski School at Whistler. She would light up the room with her smile and personality and everyone gravitated to her. Cathy had a rich sense of humor and it made a cloudy day sunny. I am sorry that she has left us and she will always have a place in our hearts.

I will remember Cathy for her beautiful smile, her infectious laugh, and her love of life! Anywhere we ran into each other, she would be so excited to find out how I was doing and share her latest adventures. Her stories would keep me laughing for days after hearing them. The "found" cookies in the freezer was one of my favourite stories! Condolences to Cathy's family. Please take care of each other through this tremendous loss.
