We’d planned to attend Doug’s Celebration of Life today but illness resulted in a change of plans.
We are there in spirit, remembering Doug with how he so often was… with a beaming smile as pictured here. Doug was fun, kind, thoughtful and considerate. He was a dedicated, knowledgeable biologist who brought everything he had to the table, including attitude from time to time. It is hard to believe he’s gone.
This memory is from 2003 or 2004, the Cranbrook ENV Bulk Buyout.
Our heartfelt condolences to his family.

Doug, you were one of my first friends when I moved to Cranbrook in 1999! You remained a fierce and loyal friend for all these years since that day we first met. I am sitting here thinking about you, and struggling to find the words to put here. There is too much to say it all. You were a fine man, strong and true. Your children were your world! I am proud to call you my friend. I love you, and I will never forget you. Rest well....you earned it.

Doug was one of my dear friends. He was the the social butterfly at work, always planning the next BBQ. When he retired, the social scene all but disappeared. He was always there for me giving advice during our Friday debriefs. I will miss him dearly. Cheers to you my friend❤️

Celine heard of Doug's passing first and just started to cry. She told me and I was shocked. We settled down and spent the rest of the evening laughing at all the wonderful and funny times we shared with Doug many decades ago.
Doug loved the Flathead valley where he worked during the summer of 1976 and stayed at Joe and Blanche McDougall's camp. I sure enjoyed field trips with Doug, often with a company or Forest Service forester along. I got to see how Doug's non-combative and very great sense of humor enabled him to gradually teach them that forests were more than trees. Similarly, I think he taught many of us "big game biologists" that unhunted species were also important. One example I've always been impressed with was how, about 45 years ago and before "biodiversity" was talked about, Doug got the red-necked feller buncher operators to just cut the tops of snags instead of cutting them right down as WCB demanded. This simple change left thousands of 12 foot tall snags with tops that soon rotted enough to be used by woodpeckers and then all the cavity using birds and mammals in the forest. This photo is of Doug in the Flathead cabin in 1979.

I can't believe Doug has passed. When we said goodbye, it was with the promise of another season of teamwork, fun and the centennial celebration of his beloved 1077 steam locomotive.
Doug was so generous – with his time and his knowledge. His calm demeanour could be fired up and I loved his passion. His wit was unsurpassed. He would often surprise us with a hilarious comment and always a twinkle in his eye.
Doug has left a void that is vast and he will be greatly missed.
Deepest condolences to all who loved him.

Doug (Dougie) Martin was an awesome work colleague of mine; Doug in Habitat Protection and me in Fish & Wildlife. His office was right beside mine and we shared many great memories together in the Kootenay Region within BC Ministry of Environment. Not only was he an excellent biologist (as exemplified by being awarded BC's Ecosystem Officer of the Year), his cynical sense of humour was brilliant. Unofficially, he acted as the social coordinator in our Kootenay office, bringing together all of the various sections - Ecosystems, Fisheries, Wildlife, Environmental Protection, Conservation Officer Service and, Doug's priority, our talented and professional Administration Staff.
Doug will be greatly missed by myself and my family, Nancy, James and Erin. We had lots of fun together!

Hearing the news of Doug's passing is sad. I was one of the many lucky people that worked with Doug at Ministry of Environment. He was such a cheerful and dedicated member of the team. His humour, his care and his genuine interest in his work was outstanding. As a friend and coworker he was always there. Doug always spoke highly of his children and the many blessings that they brought him. He will truly be missed.

I was sorry to receive the news of Doug’s passing. He was a strong, stalwart, and calm presence at Fort Steele when I worked there and I always appreciated his diplomatic approach to things. We shared an interest in railway heritage and his devotion to the railway program at Fort Steele was exemplary. I can still see him standing at the back of the train, in his overalls and cap, watching as the train reversed into the yard for end of day or a maintenance check. Thank you Doug for all that you did for FS and the people there. Strength to his friends and family at this difficult time. He will be missed.

Dear Bernadette. I was surprised and so sorry to hear of Doug’s passing. I knew him through my sister, Anna, and through the annual BC Mine Reclamation Symposium meetings. It was always great to run into him; we looked at environmental protection through the same lens, so it was always a treat to share stories during these meetings. He seemed like a kind, patient and good-humoured man. I regret I will no longer be able to look forward to renewing our friendship, seeing the twinkle in his eyes and hearing his sardonic wit. My sincere sympathies to you and your family for this huge loss. Take good care of each other. Eveline Wolterson, Vancouver.

So many wonderful memories at the roundhouse in Fort Steele, after many hot summer days running 1077 enjoying some cold brews solving world problems. He sure knew how to put on a boiler party too, steamed corn from the donkey engine and bbq burgers out of the firebox from the donkey engine. Never tasted better food. My sincere condolences to all Doug’s family. It was an honour to call him my friend.

I was devastated when I heard of Doug’s passing. I worked in conjunction with Doug in the same office as a wildlife biologist and initially he was one of several mentors but quickly became a special friend. His dedication to his craft to benefit fish and wildlife was like border terrier trying to get at a rodent. Doug’s advice in helping me with the projects I worked on was generous and unfailing.
Several issue that stand out for me was his dogged determination to stop the destruction of Henrietta Creek for coal extraction. Unfortunately his efforts were stymied and this was huge loss for him personally and for fish, wildlife and the habitat they require. His efforts in helping to eliminate the Jumbo Creek Ski project is legendary and Doug deserves a medal for that.
One of the most impactful ideas Doug had, that never left me was his idea that the Elk Valley coal mines should give 1 cent per ton of coal shipped out of the valley for future reclamation efforts. Unfortunately government did not promote this idea. Can you imagine the size of the fund and how much could be done to reclaim the lost habitat. Maybe we all should push this idea in memory of Doug.
Thanks Doug for your amazing efforts for protecting and managing habitat for fish, wildlife and the score of other creatures that exist in the East Kootenay.
Your friend Anna Fontana

Doug was an excellent biologist who truly cared about the environment, and in particular the Kootenays. He was a fixture at Fort Steele ensuring his beloved steam train was still “on track” - I can still picture his soot covered face. When he wasn’t working he was often organizing social events both for work and for friends. Doug was a good man and he will be very much missed by all that knew him.

Doug Martin was my good friend and he is sorely missed. You went much too soon my friend, and the world is a lesser place from your passing. Check things out for us Doug, and we'll see you on the other side of the river.

Three things Doug loved. The 1077 steam locomotive. His second home Cuba, and a beer with friends!
Rest in peace my friend!

I first met Doug in 2017 just after his retirement. He became a good friend in the short period of time I knew him. We shared a similar background in biology and, due to his extensive knowledge , was asked if he would assist a consultant in some difficult federal programs. His generosity and kindness will always be remembered. I know he is in his happy place sitting on a Cuban beach somewhere drinking a cold beer and enjoying the scenery.
