Obituary of Mary Isabel Jeffery
(nee Holland)
Mary Isabel "Isy" Jeffery passed away in the Rocky Mountain Village in Fernie on April 24, 2011.
Isabel was born on February 8, 1920 in the St. Eugene Hospital in Cranbrook, British Columbia. She spent her entire life in Kimberley except for a year at the Pitman School of Business in Vancouver and then the last six years at the Rocky Mountain Village in Fernie.
Isabel graduated from McKim High School in 1937. She was the first female bank teller at the Bank of Montreal in the early 1940's. Isabel was a trained bookkeeper and worked for many local businesses such as Doug Corrie; Joe Fugina (Sullivan Motors), The United Way/Community Chest, Meadowbrook Water Works and Pat Tames to name a few. In later years, Isabel was employed by Canada Post, Dr. Bob Denman and at the Mary L Dress Store in Cranbrook. She was a tireless volunteer for the Kimberley Snow Fiesta organization and the Cominco Gardens. She served in all positions in the Catholic Woman's League and was devoted to her church.
Left to mourn her passing are her daughter Faith Matthews of Kimberley; Cavan Jeffery of Ft. Maclead, Alberta; Patrick and Zena Jeffery of Campbell River and Paul Jeffery of Vernon. Also surviving are her sister Frances Sortome of Vancouver; two nieces Anita Sortome of Vancouver and Jan Kalohelani of Ledyard, Connecticut and her sister-in-law Julie Holland of Denver Colorado. Also surviving are Isabel's cousins Jean McTeer on Kimberley and her family and Marie Fraser of Prince George and her family and by Faith's extended family.
Isabel was predeceased by her parents Jack and Mary Holland; her husband Arthur Jeffery; sons-in-law Leo Franco and Gordon Matthews; her brother John Holland and brother-in-law Reidar Sortome.
A memorial mass for the long-time Kimberley resident Mary Isabel Jeffery who passed away on April 24, 2011 in the Rocky Mountain Village in Fernie will be celebrated at Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church in Kimberley on Monday, August 15, 2011 at 10:30 am.
