1924 - 2011

William David Dunwoody passed away on August 16, 2011 at the F. W. Green Memorial Home in Cranbrook at 86 years of age.

Bill was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on December 30, 1924. He spent his school years in Winnipeg. Bill served with the RCNVR during WWII, predominately on the minesweeper, the HMCS Minas, where they mostly spent in the English Channel and then became part of the Flotilla of U.S. ships attacking Cherberg, France on D-Day.

Bill and Irene were married on September 9, 1947 in Winnipeg, Manitoba and moved shortly after to the West Coast, settling in Vancouver. Then they went to Nanaimo for four years. Bill became an agent for Atlas Tire and Automotive Parts in 1968 and moved to Cranbrook. His Atlas Agency business took him to Grande Prairie, Alberta in 1982 until 1990 when he retired and returned to Cranbrook. Bill was a long time member of ACT, the Royal Canadian Legion, and was also a lifetime member of the Knights Of Columbus. He loved the Kootenays, camping, golfing and hiking in his younger years, and travelling south for the winter in later years.

Bill leaves to cherish his memory: his loving wife of 64 years Irene, daughter Nancy (Wilf) Richter of Calgary, son Douglas (predeceased in June 2008) daughter-in-law Jane of Calgary, son John (Sue Ann) of Melbourne, Australia, six grandchildren Tanys (Luigi) Betuzzi, Mark Richter, Jennifer and Erica of Calgary, and Taylor John and Keira of Melbourne, Australia, and his sister Rose Marie of Winnipeg, as well as leaving behind many nieces and nephews throughout Canada. He was predeceased by his parents, his four sisters Mary, Mima, Donna and Mona, his brother Jack.

A funeral mass for Bill will be held at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Cranbrook on Monday, August 22, 2011 at 10:00 am, with a reception following the service. His Interment will then follow in Fort Steele Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations can be made in Bill's honour to the Canadian Cancer Society, 19 - 9th Avenue South, Cranbrook, British Columbia, V1C 2L9.
