Obituary of Vera Marguerite Horak

Please share a memory of Vera to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

(nee Moore)

1922 - 2012

Vera Marguerite Horak was born in Grand Falls, Newfoundland in February 1922 and died on March 11, 2012 in Cranbrook, British Columbia at the age of 90.

In 1943 Vera was one among the first graduates of McGill University in Montreal with a Master Degree in Social Work. She earned another Master Degree in Science at the University in Wisconsin in 1960. In 1969 she married George Horak, an immigrant from Czechoslovakia. It was her first marriage. They spent together 42 years of true happiness. She desired to have several of her own children but it was too late in her life. She had none.

Vera used to be a lonely child of her well-established parents. She was predeceased in 2010 by her younger adopted brother John Moore. She will be sadly missed by John's wife Dorothy and his four daughters and their families.

Vera was a Christian with a deep living faith, a prayerful introvert, almost a mystic. She spent many years of her life in social work with poor and needy people. Externally she was a gentle and generous lady, yet deep under the surface there was a brave Newfoundlander. Money did not mean much to her. In spite of being an introvert she was a highly sociable person with a great sense of humour. At social gatherings she promptly became a star and often accepted the role of a joke master. Her husband George is missing her greatly.

The celebration of Vera's departure to the higher world will take place on Monday, March 19th, 2012 at Christ The Servant Roman Catholic Church in Cranbrook at 10:40 am. It will begin with her open casket for those who wish to see her body and say a goodbye to her in their spirit. The liturgical celebration will start at 11:00 am. After the celebration there will be a luncheon at the church hall for all guests. Her Interment will be in the Catholic Cemetery.
