It is with deep sorrow that the family of Allan Bakken announces his passing on Thursday, July 6, 2017 in Cranbrook.
Allan was born on August 28, 1921 near Wetaskiwin, Alberta. Allan was a middle child of nine children. As an infant, Allan moved to Wardner and in 1926, the family made the move to Cranbrook. Allan spent his spare time skating, playing hockey, baseball and basketball. In 1944, he married his love Elizabeth Kelly. In 1946 they welcomed daughter Marilyn. In 1949, they acquired two building lots and set to building their little house at 310 - 6th Avenue. In 1941, he started his career in a millwork plant and learned his trade. In 1970 at age 48, he opened his own glass and millwork shop. In 1971, they welcomed first granddaughter Lora-Lee and in 1973, Jana. As well as working he was a great supporter of his daughter and granddaughters in all of their events, sports and activities. Allan had a huge love for the sport of golf. Many, many non-work hours were spent at his beloved Cranbrook Golf Course. In 2000, first great granddaughter Kelly Murray was born, followed by Hailey Murray and McKenzie Hirsch in 2003.
Allan was predeceased by his beloved wife Betty and all but one sibling, Jim. He is survived by his daughter Marilyn, granddaughters Lora-Lee (Stu) Murray, Jana (Mike) Hirsch, great granddaughters Kelly, Hailey, McKenzie and numerous nieces, nephews, family members and friends.
A celebration of Allan's life will be held on August 14th at the Cranbrook Golf Course from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations to either the BC Alzheimer Society or BC SPCA would be truly welcome.
Allan's family are so thankful to all who knew and loved Allan and made visits to him. This amazing man will be truly missed.
