Obituary of George Guimont

Please share a memory of George to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

1932 - 2010

It is with great sadness that the family of George Guimont announce his sudden passing on Friday, August 13, 2010 at the age of 78 in Fairmont Hot Springs, British Columbia.

George was a loving husband, father and strong advocate for wildlife who lived life to the fullest. He was born on May 19, 1932 in Grand Falls, New Brunswick. George's first passion was baseball. He was drafted by the Detroit Tigers as a pitcher.

His love of adventure and the mountains brought him west, where he and Shirley were married in 1955.

While raising 4 children and working in the lumber industry, they purchased a lot on Columbia Lake in 1967. They settled in Kimberley and operated Bavarian News for 25 years.

In 1998 they retired to that special "lot" we call the cabin. George spent many hours in the great outdoors and enjoyed sharing his treasured stories and jokes with friends and family. One of George's greatest joys was spending time in the mountains with his son Rod.

George is survived by his loving wife Shirley Guimont; daughter Michelle Nettle in Perth Australia; son Rod (Wendy) Guimont in Cranbrook, BC; daughter Laurie Stewart (Bob Jamieson) in Tata Creek, BC; son Ray Guimont (Simonne Haney) in Kimberley, BC; grandchildren: Penny and Gina Guimont; Bryce and Kimberley Nettle; Luke and Annie Stewart; Maddie Guimont; brothers Cam and Albert Guimont; sister AnneMarie Bilodeau; as well as several nieces and nephews. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

A funeral service for George will be held on Thursday, August 19, 2010 at the Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church in Kimberley, BC at 2:00 pm. A reception will follow in the church hall. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to make a memorial donation in George's honour may do so to the: Kootenay Wildlife Heritage Fund, PO Box 100, Kimberley, British Columbia, V1A 2Y5.
