Cindy and family, John and I are so very sorry to learn of the tragic loss of your son and brother. While we never met Michael we feel as if we somewhat knew him as you have always kept us up to date on the interests and pursuits of all your children, Cindy. Your love for each of them is very obvious and no doubt Michael always knew he was deeply cared for. Our hearts go out to you all. May many good memories nourish you as you grieve your loss.

My deepest condolences to your family. I too lost my son Fred to addiction and still have another son dealing with mental health and addiction. I am so sorry for your loss, too many of our children die in this way. Please know that he is at peace now. That's how I try to see it, no more fighting with his demons. I never knew your son but I'm sure he was a wonderful young man full of hopes and dreams. Stay strong

Let me start by offering my thoughts and prayers for Cindy, Christianne, and the rest of Michael's family at this very difficult time.
I’m often not a person at a loss for words, but with this news, I have found myself to be quite reflective on my relationship with Michael, and pensive. My name is Ryan Tompkins and I worked with Michael on a couple of occasions while he sought help. I was fortunate to have had him enter my life. When working with people who struggle with mental health and/or addiction, the first, and most important step, is the relationship. Without that, nothing can happen. I was lucky to have an endearing, strong, what I believed to be, trustful, and caring relationship with Michael. He shared his thoughts, his dreams, and some of his demons with me. On occasion, I was able to help him see parts of himself I don’t think he knew were there, or at least felt some sense of shame, and possibly guilt, bearing them. His kindness. His laugh, His great sense of humour, cheekiness, and yes, at times, his overwhelming presence. What I remember mostly about him was his smile. It was big. It was full and it was real. When he smiled at you, you knew that he was with you. He would often come to me with great energy around his ambitions, what he wanted to do. What he wanted to show everyone he was capable of. I would often query him about this, and why it was so important to him. His answers varied, but always had an underlying theme. He owed it to his Mom, and wanted to bring happiness for her, instead of all the pain he was sure he had created. I responded often with the response that work on getting well, and that should do it. He showed many times he could do this. But sadly, it is an exceptionally difficult and persistent condition to discard. So I offer this to Michael. He knew I was a veteran, and that I had served for a large part of my life in the military. He asked me a lot about it and was curious. So I will send Michael off with my love, which he knew I had for him, and a saying we give to departed sailors.
Fair winds and following seas my friend. You will forever be missed.
Your friend
Ryan

I'm so sorry for your loss. I don't know you or your son, but I grieve. I too experience mental illness and have struggled with addiction.
It is a very hard road and there are few supports available.
