I met Ed Ritchie on January 7, 1997 and he scared the hell out of me. We had just sat down for our first class in the New Media Communications program at College of the Rockies. On that first day, Ed told us that he’d been creating websites for “a while” – I had never even touched email at that point, let alone done anything on the web. I thought I was doomed.
But I soon found out that Ed is a kind and generous soul who was always willing to help – sometimes with a good slice of sarcasm on the side, just to keep you humble. I certainly didn’t imagine that Ed and I would work together for almost 22 years and he would become a dear friend.
I have so many good memories with Ed over the years. Although we had our ups and downs like all friends do, and sometimes argued like an old married couple, we also had so many laughs and fun times. I don’t think I’ll ever hear anyone say “Jimmy Crack Corn” or see a bag of Hawkin’s Cheezies and not think of Ed. I tried to convince Ed that Cheezies weren’t actually real food and were instead mostly a petroleum product. One day we decided to test that theory and lit a Cheezie on fire. That sucker lit up like a torch! We thought the sprinkler system was going to go off and we’d get fired. For Ed’s 50th birthday we had Safeway decorate his cake with Cheezies. Who knew Cheezies went so well with chocolate cake?
I’ll always remember the time I talked Ed and Gina Bennett into joining me in the College golf tournament. We got to the course and I quickly discovered that not only did Ed and Gina not golf, they also didn’t have any clubs. We ended up golfing nine holes with all three of us using my clubs during a torrential downpour. By the end, we all looked like drowned rats – but, boy, did we laugh and laugh!
The “Zen of Ed” was legendary at the College and we all tried to master it. The phrase fit him so well. Along with being creative, funny, thoughtful and kind, Ed was exceedingly calm. It took a lot to get him aggravated, although I’m sure I’m sure I did my fair share.
I am so heartbroken that we have lost him much too soon. I will cherish every memory I have, and I know I will continue to hold him in my heart forever.

Ed was one of the first people I met when I returned to school as an adult student. I didn’t even know how to turn a computer on, and I remember Ed patiently walking me through even the simplest of tasks. I eventually found my footing and began to thrive - in no small part to Ed’s guidance and perseverance.
One of my fondest memories was staying late after his Tuesday night graphic design class just talking computers and design. I give him large credit for extolling his passion for digital creation onto me.
Upon graduation I was lucky enough to get the opportunity to work for Ed, who besides being an instructor, was also the College’s web master. Under his tutelage, I continued to soak up knowledge and pick up all the tricks that he had learned over his career. Whenever I screwed up, he was always there to help get me back on the track. Whenever I got too big for my britches, he was there to bring me down to earth.
I eventually moved on to a new role in a different part of the College. However, we still met every single day for coffee and to talk computers, graphic design, art, and politics. Even then, I would still lean on him for advice and perspective on how to tackle projects.
I eventually left the College for a different role, but I would periodically stop by for a coffee and to get the latest gossip and touch base on our lives. He would share stories about Petra and her love of horses, his daughters’ schooling, and his aspirations to spend more time on his artwork. Of course, he would also fill me in on his upcoming motorcycle trips and reminisce about his trip to Sturgis!
As does happen in life, the visits became less frequent, and even more so after I moved to Calgary in 2013. However, I still made a point of connecting with Ed when I would visit town.
Looking back upon those visits now, it was perhaps a selfish act on my part. Talking with Ed always reminded me of a special time in my life, and he was an integral piece of that. My heart breaks that I won’t be able to have another coffee with him.
I will dearly miss his wry sense of humour and tell-it-like-it-is analysis. He was an amazing mentor, and I am lucky to have called him a friend.
My thoughts are with Ed’s family at this very sad time.
